So it Goes

February 19, 2012

Lent starts this Wednesday, Ash Wednesday, February 22. There should be a schedule of liturgies elsewhere in this bulletin. The First Sunday of Lent is a full day in the parish. We will celebrate the Rite of Sending for our catechumens and candidates at the 10:00 A.M. Mass. They will then drive off to the cathedral in Lafayette to be called to the sacraments by Bishop Doherty. We also begin a five week series using “Catholicism” by Fr. Robert Barron. This will take place in St. Agnes Hall, from 1:00 P.M. to 2:30. The First Sunday of Lent also features adoration all day, ending with Evening Prayer and Benediction at 7:00 P.M. Our Confirmation class also meets next Sunday. I hope I haven’t left anything out!

Lent, of course, is all about preparing for Easter. For our catechumens and candidates they are preparing to celebrate the Sacraments of Initiation – Baptism, Confirmation, and Holy Communion. For us, the already Baptized, we are preparing to renew our commitment to the Lord at Easter. We, all of us, do so by paying more attention to prayer, fasting and almsgiving. It is important that we be intentional about this so that when Easter comes we will be ready to celebrate new life, and a deepened life in Christ.

Lent is also about walking with Jesus on the way to Calvary, with a view to the resurrection. Whatever you do for Lent (and I hope you do at least a little something!) should help you with this image of journey with Christ. It should make a difference not only at Easter, but for the rest of our lives.

I pray that your Lent will be good and holy, and properly penitential!

Fr. Goth
